This Aboriginal king plate is 8 inches wide. It features the words "Pompey Prince of Blackall". It was collected in Central Queensland c.1895. These king plates were highly prized by their Aboriginal owners who wore them around their necks. White land owners usually gave out these king plates to Aborigines who had standing in their tribe and sometimes for services rendered. The king plate is made from brass and features its original chain. King plates are prohibited exports and can not be sold or posted to international customers.

Description: Dot Painting

Item: G40

This artwork is by famed Warmun (Turkey Creek) artist Jack Britten (b.1925). It measures 37 x 38 inches on an irregular piece of canvas. It is painted with natural earth pigments and bush gum. It is signed JACK on the back. This excellent artwork was collected by Rick Chapman in April 1990. Rick Chapman was the manager of the community store and CDP (Community Development Program) at Warmun 1990-95. According to Rick, this artwork was in the back of Jack's ute (small truck) for a "long time" prior to purchase. The painting depicts a man and woman, head to head. They have their fingers on their hearts and are dreaming of their homeland. The man is the bigger of the two. Both the man and woman exhibit "law scars" (ritual initiation scars). Interestingly this same dreaming is depicted in another artwork on this site: G21 by Charlie Mardigan. This painting by Jack Britten is currently in a large frame under glass (I decided to frame it this way because Jack had painted right to the edge). If the buyer wishes, I can remove the artwork from the frame. This would significantly reduce shipping costs.
